SPIDERS
New Zealand has a large spider fauna, many of which find their way into homes at certain times of the year. As far as is known the only dangerous spiders in this country is the Australian Redback, Whitetail (or white-tailed) and the native Katipo.

The life span of most spider species can normally be measured in months due to the astronomically high attrition rate to birds, wasps, frogs etc. Spiders cause no harm, and in fact are exclusively predatory feeding on other inspects and are therefore considered as beneficial. Their most annoying aspect is the unsightly cobwebs they leave.

Some people suffer from feelings of revulsion of spiders called arachnophobia.
Young spiders are considered to evolve from the nest anytime from July.
Daddy longlegs or Harvestmen are like extreme spiders, and have eight exceptionally long thin legs. They are not true spiders and do not spin webs.

The spider is such an effective controller of small insects in their own right. Other than treating for spiders in the immediate home area, it is recommended not to use sprays any more than necessary in outer perimeter and garden areas such as stone walls and fences. Spiders in these areas assist with an outermost defense against incoming insects.
